I moved from Long Island, New York to Clermont, Florida last year. I live about eight miles from Disney's Animal Kingdom, so I'm in a high tourist area.
The people are incredibly friendly, you can strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. There are alot of Christians and conservative people, but it is very tempered in the Orlando/tourist areas. People are very tolerant (if not ignorant of) alternative lifestyles and religions: they either don't care or they just choose not to know.
Not sure what part of New England you're from, but driving down here is a whole different creature. People get out of your way! If you're in the left/fast lane and come up on another car, they immediately move to the next lane so you can pass. Where I live, we have a lot of tourists who aren't sure where they are or where they're going, so you tend to become more patient of idiots on the road. Most roads are main roads with average speeds of 60-80 miles per hour.
Many arrogant assholes from New England already moved down here!! lol. We can't shake a stick without meeting another ex-New Yorker. Sadly (for us, at least, being Yankee and Met fans) they seem to ship in Boston Red Sox fans, who think nothing of making incredibly nasty comments to anyone wearing a Yankees cap at Disneyworld.... but we're learning to deal with it. Of course, we can basically go to Disney any day of the week, even after work, so it makes it easier to bear their crap! Plus, we haven't shoveled snow in 19 months, haven't had an ice storm, and don't have to deal with the parking lots called 'parkways' that we had on Long Island. It gets hot and stays hot from the end of May through most of August, but we were at Disney one night in mid-December with no jackets on.
There are idiots everywhere, even in Central Florida, but I have to admit, when the sun is shining and there's no snow anywhere, it makes it easier to not care about the idiots!

I was raised here so it seems natural to me...a lot of people are from somewhere else though, so floridians are a pretty good cross section of eastern US citizens...we are being invaded by latinos the last 15 years though which I am not too keen on but I guess I have to learn to live with it. I've spent time all over the U.S. and don't find people that much different...I think you'll enjoy it...you'll really have a different weather pattern to deal with...if you have never been down here in the summer stand by for an adjustment dear...lol...90% humidity and mid 90's everyday...I love it!!

Hey! Another New Englander! I'm from New York originally myself and I've lived here in Florida for fourteen years. I almost died from friendliness when I came here. Don't get me wrong, there are jerks everywhere but people here actually talk to each other. It took me a long time to get used to that. I used to walk around thinking, "Why the hell is that person saying hello to me? They don't know me!" It's a much more relaxed atmosphere down here. As for Christianity what you say is true. There seems to be a church of one sort or another every 10 feet. Maybe the people here are so nice because so many of them are so religious (not just Christian but any type of religion). You're really going to like it down here. But don't throw out your sweaters because it gets cold in the winter. When you're just visiting the winter weather feels good but when you live here it feels cold. Good luck with the move! ;)

i lived in new england my whole life, then i moved to pensacola florida. It really is soooo different there. people are really different. everything is a lot more laid back and casual. it seems that everything moves a bit slower there, not so rushed like the north. people are very friendly. the whole lifestyle is different. i really enjoyed it there....its beautiful and so many kind people are there and the wheather is great. i now live in boston ma and i definatly miss florida so much, i would go back in a second. about the christian thing, where i lived is considered part of the bible belt of the south, so yes there were many many christians and churches EVERYWHERE lol. good luck and have fun

I guess it would depend on where you're moving to. I've had friends that complain about the rudeness of people in S. Fla, and find that people in other areas (tampa, orlando) are much nicer. Just know that culture is a little different down here... just a little more spanish influence in some places, though it's starting to spread into the north part of the state. Orlando, Tampa, Tally, G-Ville have a big college party scene. S. Fl has one too, but it's not so college-derived. I just hope you enjoy the hurricanes ! :)

Well they're like people anywhere. There are a lot of transplants from other states so it's a very diverse population in Florida. I actually met more transplants than Florida natives when I lived there. There's a large hispanic population down in Miami. I lived in Orlando for a long time and met a lot of friendly people there. You'll have to judge for yourself.Good luck!

Northern Florida is still part of the deep south and bible belt. Very different than New England.
South Florida is a sprawling metroplex of immigrants & Transplants - Cuba, Puerto Rico, and huge numbers of transplants from the North East. Life is fast paced.
Central Florida is a bit gentler, more family oriented. It's a mix of immigrants, transplants, and natives - very middle America.

As a native Fl the best advice I can give you is DO NOT SAY....Well back home up north we did it this way.
or Back home up north we had REAL pizza, REAL weather the 4 seasons kind, we had REAL shopping malls. you get the picture. If you do happen to let this type of slur escape you mouth you may hear something like "Yankee go home".
Otherwise we are a very easy to get along with.
