It's possible - but it's not a good idea to hammer it straight through. There is the 'highway hypnosis' factor - it's very real (just ask the highway patrols who have to clean up the wreckage after the single car accidents, when someone simply zones out behind the wheel. If you are determined to do it, you should program a couple of breaks in there - a real break. Take an hour off. Have a meal. Walk around the parking lot a dozen times, do a few pushups, and then get back in the car. There are rest stops along all the major highways, and they are put there for that very reason - so you can pull in,use the biffy, and take a break from driving.

"The DaVanci Code" is good for traveling. It is well-read and suspenseful, even if you've already read it or seen the movie. Another one is "Fried Green Tomatoes." And, depending on where your interest level lies, the new Einstein book "Einstein, His Life and Times" is on audio, and is very interesting. The Einstein one is completely harmless, and I believe that the other two are void of swearing, as well. Usually most of that is edited out when a book is being recorded. Finally, ALL of the Harry Potter books are great in the recorded version. From 4 on they get a little dark, but the first two are incredibly fun and the speaker does great voices that would probably entertain your daughter. My daughter loved them when they first came out -- she was five then.

Harry Potter audio books are VERY good, although I wouldn't recommend more than the first one, Sorcerer's Stone, for a 4 year-old (they get darker and scarier after the first). The first one is not scary and there is no language, but still enjoyable for adults. Even if you've already read Sorcerer's Stone, it's worth it to listen to the audio book, and if you haven't, it's a way to get a glimpse of the hype :)

LibriVox provides free audio-books from the public domain. There are several options for listening. The first step is to get the mp3 or ogg files into your own computer:

A lot of Agatha Christie books are on tapes and/or cds. They have great storylines, and minimal offensive content. I'd rate them PG.
