Buy what ever you like, anything will do. In my experience (I do computer repairs), IBM/Lenovo (IBMs are built by Lenovo now) laptops are great, HP and Gateway are OK, Dell and Acer seem to break alot.
If you want something different Apple Macbooks are nice and Apple has some of the best help services out there.
I dont recomend linux unless you want to relearn everything you know about computers, Apple might not be windows but compared is still very user friendly and many windows programs work on apples.
Linux offers freedom of choice but many windows programs will not run unless you know alot about using emulator programs. And Ubuntu whiel a very goood disto of Linux, comes installed with almost nothing, and requires a user to spend hours looking up infomation to get it to do what windows and macs can do right out of the box.

well if I was to buy a laptop, it would not be a Dell or HP. and another thing I would NOT have on my system would be MS windows be it VISTA or XP,,,
Dell and HP are pre installing Linux, on their systems they are now supporting Linux which is a good thing. being that windows Vista is having lots of problems with the bugs in the system.and it is going to take the next 2 years to sort out the problems
stay away from the mac, if you buy one you will be tied to Apple for the life duration of the computer,, and you will be over charged for the hardware and software,
so If I was you I would check out just what you can do with Linux on a laptop.

any brand will do but what matters is the internet service provider that you use that does matter...but when looking for a laptop you have to think about what are you going to be using it for...i would recommend a dell not only are they good but the customer service they have is good

for just internet surfing, i think i'd go with a macbook.
no spyware or virus's can infect it, and Apple has incredible tech support.
