Ok, so I have 8 coment goldfish in my fish tank. I only had the fish for 2 days. The fish tank weighs up to 10 gallons of water. And the water has been getting cloudy, but I can still see the fish. I haven't been adding anything in the fish tank ,but fish food. Like no chlorine or anything. When I got them I just add the water and a filter and thats it. So I went to PetsMart. And I asked what I should use. They Told me to use (TOP FIN) Bacteria Supplement to help boost for your aquarium *Reduces Fish Loss Treats 60 gallons 2 fl oz (59 mL). The guy told me to use it once a week. And I used it yesterday (7/9/07) and i woke up today and the water is still cloudy. Can anyone help?

There are two main culprets of cloudy water. The problem is either that you are simply feeding the fish too much, or over population. You have way to many fish for a ten gallon tank. Fish do create waste - which then makes the water cloudy. Bacteria is NOT going to clear up the water. Also, you never add chlorine to a fish tank. The problem might also be under filtering. Check the model of the filter to make sure that it is at least for a 10 gallon tank ( I recommend one for a 15 gallon - it could clear up the water) I know you love your fish and love to watch them eat (I do too) but over feeding your fish can also lead to health problem for them such as swim bladder disorder.

Wow. Well, Commet Goldfish get more than a foot long, so in a 10 gallon tank, there is not enough room for one Goldfish. Give all the fish back to the store and start over. Of course the pet store sold you something, they made some money. You didn't need that for that occasion, you needed that before you added the fish. After all your fish are gone, let all the water sit in the tank for a week with the filter running. After a week, the water will be clear. Then, go get some Minnows from the pet store and add them into the tank. The other option would be to get a heater and have a nice tropical tank. For a tropical tank, Guppies, Mollies, Platties, Tetras, and Barbs are good starter fish. The other possibility for the cloudiness is that you did not wash the gravel before you put it in the tank. Gravel needs to be washed thouroughly before putting it in the tank because of all the dust and gravel chips in it.

Hi-I know I may start to sound like a broken record but if you had done your research BEFOREHAND you would have saved money, saved yourself the hassle & heartache of a timebomb tank & most importantly saved your fish the torment they are undoubtedly going through now.
you have a severely overstocked tank there & I'm afraid that's putting it mildly. A 10 gallon tank is just about suitable for a couple of baby Goldfish for 6 months, did the the employee at Petsmart know your circumstances? If they did then they are behaving extremely irresponsibly & living up to their already poor record when it comes to telling the truth about fishkeeping.
To put it simply-no amount of any 'miracle cure' that you can pour into your tank or any filtration will have any effect on such a small tank with so many fish except prolong their agony, if they had feet they'd be standing on top of one another-please imagine yourself in an elevator with 7 other people & never being allowed out-EVER now look again at your tank.
What you have there is just about the stocking level for a 100 gallon tank & that's being conservative. I strongly suggest you take back 6 of the fish as soon as possible & put the money toward at least a 20 gallon tank with lid & powerful filter for your remaining favourite 2 . Also, please read the attached link if you care anything about your fish.

It's probably because of having that many goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. You should only have 1 goldfish per 10 gallons. Goldfish don't have stomachs so they produce a lot of waste. Also if you haven't let your tank cycle yet it's going to be cloudy for a few days. Good luck with everything, it should clear up... That's still too many goldfish for a 10 gallon tank though.

"Overfeeding" has already been mentioned a few times.
Let me put it another way...you LOVE those fish and want to give them the best of care...and that's a good thing, BUT...you can OVER love them by feeding them too much, too often..you can actually destroy the bacterial balance that an aquarium should have and end up killing the fish.
Read up and listen to the advice others are giving you on how to take care of your aquarium and stay within those guidelines, especially when it comes to what to feed them and especially how much and how often.
If the water is still cloudy, I would change out about two-thirds of it for fresh water and remember that the cloudiness won't go away right away, it will take a little time if you've done the right thing to properly treat and filter the water.

i dont like to tell people this but i tihnk your tank is overstocked. i dont know the size of your fish but i kno comets get big and 8 of them in a 10 gallon tank is not gunna be good your gunna either have to get a bigger tank, get rid of some fish, or keep the fish and just let them suffer. i wouldnt recommend the last one :-)
tank could be cloudy for a couple reasons
-overfeeding
-tank cycleing
-under filtered
well i dont know how much your feeding but only feed them what they eat for 3 minutes then remove rest of food
i would recommend getting a master test kit so you can check your reading to tell if you tank is cycleing which it most likely is. cycleing is where your tank starts to basically make the neccessary bacteria to keep your tank healthy. and the cloudyness could be a bacteria bloom.
filtration - if you bought a whisper 10 for your 10 gallon tank thats not good you should always buy a step or 2 higher especially if you are overstocking your tank i use a whisper 30 on my 10 gallon and its always crystal clear.
remember they say 1" of fish for every 1 gallon so you could have 10 - 1" fish in there or 5 - 2" or 3 - 3" get the idea....
hope this has helped you.
good luck with your problem

The bacteria isn't to clear the water, it is to make it healthier for the fish... it sounds like you have a problem with over feeding?? Gold fish are generally very dirty fish. There are chemicals you can add to take the cloudyness out of the water, but I would try a few water changes first (do a third today and maybe another third in a couple days) and only feeding them a good sized pinch twice a day and see if it improves! Otherwise, go back to petsmart and ask them simply point out which product helps the cloudyness in the water!

This could be as simple as overfeeding. You will want to do a partial water change, preferably with aged water to assure that any chlorine has had time to escape the water. (Get yourself a clean 5 gallon pail from Home Depot or the local hardware store, that you will use for nothing but your fish.) Generally aging the water overnight is sufficient. Secondly, cut back on feeding the fish. Fish don't require tremendous amounts of food. Just a pinch a couple of times a day.
This also could be something else, but from your description and the time involved I'd go with overfeeding as an initial diagnosis.

you cant have comets in a tank they need to be in a pond they can get 2 ft and also 8 of them in a 10 gal??? that tank is way over crowded and comets give off lots of ammonia and nitrate levels so that could explain the cloudy water do you have a gravel vac?? if you do then do a gravel vac every Monday and get those fish out of that tank they wont survive return them or buy a pond

Maybe get a stronger filter. Goldfish are messy and they need a lot more cleaning then other fish. One quarter water change at least once a week. New water needs to be treated with water ager. Good luck!
