Check with your teacher see what is allowed.

The TI-83 plus or TI-84 + is probably the best bet.

Some teacher might tell you to get the TI-89 for calculus I. Don't, you don't need it. The TI-89 it has a lot of features but you won't learn the material as well. And in order to pass the AP exam you need to know the material (half the test you aren't allowed to have a calculator). I went through calc I,II with my TI-83 it's easy to use and can do any computation you need.

The only advantage the TI-89 has is the symbolic computation but if your going into Calc I you should be able to do anything it can do already using it will just make you forget stuff and probably in the end hurt you more then it'll help.

I'd say get the TI-83 plus, I still have mine today and it still works I've dropped it 10,000 times and it's still kicking.

if it is a college course they will probably require you to that one or one similiar. I personally prefer my old hp 48g that i got online on e-bay for 50 and it was all i needed for all of my math classes.
