A mixture of environmental influences and experiences, and in some part genetics. Usually genetics play only a small part in the picture, they tip the balance more one way if you catch my drift (i.e. make you more likely to be a certain sexuality). Nobody is born gay as such, there is no proof of this, and it is very unlikely (problems distinguishing cause and effect). Also very few people are 100% gay or straight, sexuality is a spectrum that can move and change over time.

in the womb, at the beginning, a foetus has characteristics of both genders. At 6 weeks, it receives a surge of either male or female hormones which allow it to develop into either male or female.(bear in mind everyone has both male and female hormones)
Gay people come about when the foetus receives too much of the wrong hormones. For example, if a foetus recieves the hormones to make it develop as a female but also recieves too many male hormones,or vice versa, there is a good chance that the foetus will be gay.

Science is said to have proven that being gay is innate. This can be classified as true statement in present day due to carrying genetic memories of the past. Through reading it has come to my understanding that gay/ lesbian acts were started through ritual worship(people were not born gay) and as people became moralistic it became taboo.
As I am a believer in universal laws, which many of us do not follow any more, we have given rise to many things that are unnatural. Everything that exists has its counterbalance and everything between land and sky is provided how many of us live naturally?. We now live by the guide lines of man made things.
so my conclusion is, being gay is man made and now has become an identifiable characteristic

Basically, we don't know yet.
It's suggested that it is due to the way your "sexual pathways" in your brain develop when you're in the womb. Obviously they only activate during puberty but basically they're set in stone before you're even born.
Everything else that has been used to explain it, upbringing, etc, has been shown to be inconsistent so I'm going with the above hypothesis ~ We're like CDs, our tracks are burnt once and we just play the same songs again and again.

I think people make themselves gay because if they say they were born a man but really a girl, hen they are saying that god made a mistake. God didn't make Adam and Adam, he made Adam and Eve.
