I've recently called a recycling center on the matter and the lady said that new batteries do not contain mercury and are safe to throw out. Some states take them in their recycling. You should call your town's recycling or sanitation department to find out. (The batteries I am referring to are the small ones like C's, D's, AA, etc... Larger batteries have to be disposed of differently- like car batteries.)

Check with Your local recycling company. Batteries are toxic and need to be properly recycled

Cell phone batteries depending on where you are from can be taken to any cell phone place to be recycled or even OfficeMax....

Other batteries- like for toys etc.. .I think can just be thrown away.. I'm not sure I've switched to rechargeable...
