It is ok to flush in most instances- but there are some places that have really bad plumbing- if you know the plumbing is bad- don't flush... just wrap it in some toilet paper and throw it away.

The tampon manufacturers do say that tampons themselves are safe for septic systems; some say you can also flush the applicator (if it's not plastic).
I grew up in a house with a plumber, no one was flushing anything but the usual stuff down our toilets! No tampons! No kleenex! Nothing but bodily functions and toilet paper. The plumbers in my family hate it when they are called to fix a plugged toilet and it's tampons stuck in the pipes, which happens a lot.

I work for a plumbing company and I have always been told you should be ok if you flush them but overtime it starts to clog the plumbing at your home. Try not to flush them as most as you can over time you will see the results.

If you flush they will eventually clog up the toilet. Wrap in toilet paper and throw away.
