Not being a Brit, I am not sure, but I watch old Python episodes for the same reason I watch the Marx Brothers and Mel Brooks. They are still funny.
Python in particular are intelligent humour. To appreciate how many different comedic levels they operate on you damned well need a degree in classics, political science and medicine. Perhaps the reason you do not "get" Python is that you are simply unprepared to appreciate them.
North American culture supremacists frequently do not find the humour of others amusing. Is this because we are smarter than them, or because we are arrogant, and have had our humour circuits bent by watching too many Popeye cartoons?
To make my point: there is no funnier comic piece about political extremes than the scene between King Arthur and Dennis (the peasant in the field) in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." They tear strips off both the right and the left equally, and make both sides laugh at themselves while they do it. Watch that scene again, and cast W. Bush as Arthur, with Al Sharpton as Dennis.
Still funny after all these years.

Actually, most of the "Monty Python" fans I have met have been American. As an American, I have to say that I actually prefer British comedy to American comedy. After all, the Brits have a hilarious dry wit, whereas American humor relies more on jokes about the obvious and on slapstick. And believe it or not, I have never gotten much into "Monty Python". Rather, I much prefer shows like "Are You Being Served?", "Keeping Up Appearances", "Waiting for God", and "The Last of the Summer Wine", just to name a few.

Actually it is all over 30 years old. I think it ended in 1974.
I suspect that they have never been able to come up with anything better or even as good.
