We (Me, hubby and 2 kids) are flying to Marsa Alam tomorrow for 2 weeks. I am very well prepared having bought enough factor 50, mozzy spray, pain killers, kids remidies etc to sink a ship !!!! Any tips on Egpyt in general, child friendly places to visit and things to do. We are going all inclusive but dont want to spend 2 weeks in the hotel complex !!! We are staying at Iberotel Lamaya and we are from UK. It will be our first trip to Egypt

Hi there, well it sounds as though you are well prepared.... please ignore the majority of answers(really not fazed by the thumbs down fairies)you will be perfectly safe & so will your children, apply the same rules as with any holiday you have taken before. Do not drink the water... buy nestle it should cost you no more the 1.5le(15p)for a 1&1/2litre bottle... Also buy a few large bottles of cocacola, take out the gas & when you feel(i sincerely hope you don't)a tummy upset coming on drink as much of it as you can.. don't ask how it works coz i have no idea but it settles your tum in less than an hour!! Stay out of the sun as much as possible during 11am & 3pm the sun is at it's strongest during these times.Also, make sure you pack a hat for each of you & good quality sun glasses you will most certainly need them!!
Don't drink alcohol during the day, especially if you sitting in the sun.
As for the area you are visiting I have only been there looking at property, hope to move there one day...... u could log into ..... www.trip advisor.com & check out the area, there should be places of interest listed here for you to choose from.
Always bartar for your purchases, never pay first price asked, unless the goods are priced up then it's unlikely they'll reduce them, make sure you lock valubles in the safety deposit boxes & never leave anything of value out on show in the room.
Think i've covered most things,but if you have any further questions come back & post them i will be only too pleased to answer them for you, i have lived in Egypt now for 19years & can honestly say i feel much safer here than i ever did in the U.K. & the people are so warm & friendly.. absolutely adore children & will give you all a very big welcome!!!

Put your sun block on 1 hour before you go outside, and put it on everywhere! Dress conservatively in loose cotton, light colored clothes. Make sure everyone wears a hat too!
Wear closed toes shoes to the Great Pyramids or any place that you will be walking around in the desert. Even good sandals with rubber bottoms aren't good enough. When I was at Giza, I stumbled and cut the tip of my toe off!
Do not eat any fruit unless you rinse it off in bottle water. Do not drink fruit drinks either because there might be water in them.
Take a million photographs! Make sure you are in a few of them too.
Take a dinner cruise on the Nile. There will be a belly dancer and a whirling dervish. Have your photo taken with the dervish and get up and dance with the belly dancer. It is so much fun.
Visit the temples and tombs in the early morning or evening. You will be able to see the carvings a lot better with the low sun. It is also a lot cooler outside. When you visit the Valley of the Kings, go in the morning because no one else is there yet! It is still cool from the night too! Don't hesitate to ask your guide a million questions.
Buy everyone a galabeya! (It's a long cotton tunic.) You might have a chance to go to a galabeya party, which is a lot of fun.
If you visit the Egyptian museum in Cairo, do your shopping in a little gift shop across the street. Everything is really cheap. Get a pack of blank papyrus for the kids to draw on. You can draw on it with pencil first, and it erases really nicely. Then paint over the pencil with acrylic paint. I'd also suggest seeing papyris made at Tanis papyris and watch a rug making demo.

i have been to Egypt lots of times and i am also English seems like you already got most medication, but would reccomend immodium just in case. If you havent got visas and i think you will need them, you need approximately £10 cash in English per passport to get a visa. the Sinai peninsula is except from visas but i dont think marsa alam will be as its on the mainland. bargain for everything you buy even for the taxi ride. tip everywhere Egyptians are paid very poorly. Egyptians love children and are very friendly people you will have a great time really. it will be very hot take it easy in the day stay in shade cool off regularly and it will also be hot at night temps are usually high 30's low 40's in the day and high 20's at night. i cant offer any help on visits, you are a long way from the valley of the kings etc in luxor, long coach trip but it is interesting and im not sure what else there is in marsa alam as i have neer been there. have fun

You should first take a look on the map. Marsa Alam is south Hurghada on the red sea. There is not many things to do around. You can visit Luxor or Aswan if your travel agency organise tours to there. Also you may like to visit Cairo but it's quite far from Marsa Alam.
All I can tell you now is to enjoy your time with kids. Keep away from the direct sun and drink enough. Keep salt level in your food high enough if you and your family are active. Also let the kids try all the natural juices, it's healthy in Egypt.

I worked in Egypt for 5 years on contract,( I have worked in many places in the world)
I actually worked off shore from the Sinai 28 days on 28 days off (in the UK if I wanted it )!
I actually visited the place you are going to, just to see what it was all about, it was an up and coming tourist attraction at the time , it has vastly improved now!
I found the Egyptian people very friendly, they love kids (from anywhere)

Bring small bills in your own currency (and one-pound Egyptian notes) for tips, because they expect them for everything. Also, if you're going to be doing any sightseeing, I would suggest bringing toilet paper so that you don't have to pay for it. Water should be no more than ten Egyptian for two liters, and the best deal I found was, in fact, ten pounds for three two-liter bottles. Keep well hydrated, especially the kids, and try to drink three or so two-liter bottles during the day PER person. Having never travelled to Egypt with kids, I couldn't tell you how much they ought to be drinking, but my suggestion would be that they should be taking small drinks from a water bottle as often as they feel they need them, and perhaps more. Other than that, have a fantastic time! I had the best time of my life in Egypt, and I have no doubt that you will as well!

i wonder why some jerks come here and keep on saying wrong things about egypt??? don't listen to them anyway...u'll have fun to the fullest i'm sure of that...i didnt go to marsa allam before but i heared that it's amazing, the sea, the sun and the weather...but u should visit also Cairo where u can find the pyramids, the egyptian muesum...and Luxor n Asswan where u cand find the old egyptian temples, the beautiful nile....and so many...
marsa allan is on the red sea and anything on the red sea like Hurgadah and sharm el Sheikh is really enjoyable and amazing...don't forget to tell me about ur trip when u're back...have fun n don't listen to those stupid...

wow you are gonna love it there, I have not been there yet but i have some very good friends who are from there, if you are in the area go see the red sea, one of my friends is a geography teacher in Egypt and she has always said go to see the Red Sea it is beautiful. You can swim in it. You can see to the bottom. From looking at maps where u are you are pretty far from Giza, if you wanted u can take a trip up to the pyramids and there is a museum in Alexandria that is nice, from what I hear there is so much there u wouldnt be able to go through it in one day. We plan on going in a few years to stay with our friends over there. Have fun! Oh the exchange rate there is pretty good, so bring enough cash, or credit cards. Tina

have a great time haggle with the egptians when u go out the complex and be careful in some on hte taxi they drive mad snorkenling is good to do in the sea we went on a glass bottom boat trip which was good and ur children will enjoy drink plenty of bottled water and keep out the sun as the tummy upset is not nice i had it twice but pills from the chemist in nammba bay are cheap have a great time enjoy and take care haggle
