My new grandchild is having problems because nowadays they do not give mother a endema before the birth and gross as it sounds he swallowed some of moms fecal material on his way out.
25 years ago my daughter stopped breathing at 2 weeks, I was in labour for only 2 hours and they didn't have time to give me anything. She lived but it was a scary time. To this day I don't think the doctors knew what happened to her. They told me it was a urine infection that made her stop breathing. HELLO! I am pretty sure that wasn't the cause! Grrr! some doctors really bug me with their diagnoises!

While I was in labor my water broke and it was green which meant he had eliminated while in the womb. Before he was delivered they flushed me out with saline. As he was delivered they didn't make him cry till they had cleaned his mouth and nostrils. Even with all these precautions, he developed breathing problems from the inhaled fecal matter. Starting at age 2 months he took a nebulizer Albuterol treatment 6 times a day. At about 6 months of age they added the asthma medicene Pulmicort. At about 10 months he was started on Dytan D allergy medicine. He is now 18 months old and totally off the nebulizer treatments. He still has to take the allergy medication which could be caused from the weakened lungs. I have noticed that now that it is warmer and more humid he is having spells of heavy breathing. He has a doctors appt. soon.
I hope something here was helpful. I f you have more questions email me.

My daughter breathes hard a lot. It sounds like she's been crying and is trying to catch her breath. I asked the doctor at the hospital about it and he said "she will grow out of it". At her 6 week check up she was still doing it so I asked her pediatrican about it and now I have a home nurse that visits every other week. We are watching very close for any change in color. My brother had the same fast breathing as my daughter when he was a baby and after a few weeks my mom found out he was missing a valve in his heart and had sleep apnea. He ended up wearing a heart monitor for the first year of his life. Luckily so far my daughter hasnt stopped breathing, but I'm still very concerned about her "catching her breath" all the time.

When my son was born he didn't breathe for 2 1/2 minutes. It seemed like hours. I could see the RN's and Dr. start to panic. Once he started breathing I think they were so relieved they didn't finish suctioning him. When he came home he would cough up thick mucus looking stuff that would come up and get stuck in his throat i had to use a nasal aspirator to clear his airway. When my niece as born she didn't breath for 3 mins when she finally started breathing she stopped breathing about 6 times as the nurses argued whether or not to suction her again. I think a lot of the problems are caused from doc's and nurses with little experience and too many people being in the room. If it's not a high risk pregnancy why do you need five nurses in a room. My son and my niece are healthy toddlers.

That sounds like something called merconium (sp?) Ive had 2 friends who've had babies with complications from that. My son was also a preemie and had apnea for a few weeks. We ended up getting an Angel Care monitor (about $70) to detect movement in the crib - it beeped if it didnt detect movement after 20sec.

My sister had twins way too early. (about 30 weeks) We were all watching the babies thru the windows because they said one of them might not make it. It was sad to watch the preist of the hospital come pray over the baby like they too knew that it might turn out for the worst. Today, she has two boys that are roundy as can be but cute as can be as well.
