Trying to figure out which dual sport bike is better. Must be a street legal bike as well.

I would and did choose the KLR 650. The United States Marines use KLRs during deployments. If this doesn't speak volumes about the KLR's abilities and reliability I don't know what does.

The KLR is one of the best deals in motorcycling if you can deal with the lack of acceleration. They are coming out with a new model for 2008 and have upgraded practically everything on the bike to make it more comfortable and safer (the brakes on the older models where fairly weak)

So for 200 dollars more than an 07 model you get a better fairing, better seat, better brakes, better suspension.

Sadly it is not all good news, I have heard from different magazines that the bike has picked up about 15-20 pounds in the process and lost nearly an inch of ground clearance.

But if you are not going to be going anywhere to rugged it is a better street bike than the DRZ

If on the other hand just want a street legal dirt bike to get you from one trailhead to the other and don't plan on getting it on interstate, the DRZ is much lighter, with longer suspension and a much better dirt bike over all.

Goodluck in what ever you choose.

given those two choices, I would pick the KLR over the DRZ. my main position would be the size of the bike and maintaining highway speeds for any distance. the extra 250 ccs make a pretty huge difference and I would not mind the additional weight of the bigger bike...

but with that said, I will bounce another idea off of you. if you are looking for a dual sport bike but mainly going to be riding it off road or on fire break roads, I would opt for the DRZ as it is lighter and more dirt friendly.

there are other options also like the Honda XR650L, KTM 525EXC (street legal in '07) or the KTM 640 Adventure.

like one of the previous stated, a version of the KLR is used by the US Armed forces and is a proven bike...
