Have you not thought of the couple ending their days in their own home? A full time caregiver could be hired, and it would be cheaper than the cost of putting a couple into a nursing home.

Or maybe a relative could step forward to volunteer to take care of the couple in their own home.

I did this for my own parents. It meant leaving a very well-paying government job, but I had promised myself that I would never let my parents be placed in a nursing home, so I bit that bullet and became a full-time caregiver.

Even though I lost a lot monetarily, what I gained in recompense (the years of talking to my parents adult to adult, the smiles, the laughs, and not incidentally the home after my father died) made the time well worth it.

Each of my parents went drastically downhill physically the last couple of months of their lives. Yes, it is hard taking care of your mother and father as if they are small children. But, just like small children as well, the bonding that results is phenomenal.

Anyway it gives you something to think about beside assisted living or nursing homes.
