The reason its illegal, besides the std's and stuff, is that the government can't charge tax on it. If they could find a way to charge tax, then it would be legal. The thing is, there would be too many jobs perfomed under the table, that the government would lose out on its cut.
Its illegal to exchange money for sex, however it is legal to buy a woman dinner first, then have sex with her. In a way, its the same thing. If you paid a woman for sex, she will probably take the money and eat afterwards, so with prostitues, you are just rearranging how the night is going to go. Sex, then food.
Don't get me wrong, I am not compairing women to prostitution, but it is kinda the same thing. It also goes the other way, some women will buy a guy dinner, and then have sex with him. Its rare, but sometimes the woman is rich and wants the pool boy, so they treat him, and get sex in return.

In this country, the straightforward sale of sex for money is illegal for both buyer and seller, except in the state of Nevada. As to why it is....partly because of the social mores that surround it, partly because of the Biblical "take" on prostitution, partly because of the fact that we are a patriarchal society, partly because of the many and, occasionally, deadly STD's out there. The second half of your question has been and will be debated to death, but still has no definitive answer. Women who marry for money are selling sex, make no mistake about it. Men who ply women with dinner, dancing, drinks, and small talk are buying sex, period. Let's call it what it is. So why is it illegal? It goes on all the time...I guess it is only illegal if you get caught.

This is the funny thing about the good old USA, if you are a person not of wealth it is illegal to pay some one for sex, but if you are wealthy you can
offer a women or man, what ever your preference, a car to use, an apartment for six months, and a spending allowance in exchange for a relationship, which in the end if the person is not happy they can take all the things away.
so what is the difference?

Because it is not taxed. Anything that involves money and is not taxed by the government seems to be made illegal. Believe me, if the government could get a guarentee that every prostitute would report their earnings to the IRS, prostitution would be legal.

Yes, because most states deem prostitution illegal, Nevada is the only state that allows legal prostitution in some places.
