Paying for a membership in a gym can be rewarding. But it can also be a major drain on your wallet if you dont go. You need to figure out how many days a week you need to go to realize the best value for your money.
Many gyms have services you may never use, but still have to pay for, like pools, kids day care, basketball courts, etc. If you have no real intention to use the "extras", I would recommend the YMCA, or your citys' community center, where the rates would be much cheaper.

Well as someone who works at a gym I'd say go for it. But regardless where i work, it is a good thing. I would say since you sound like a beginner, you should probably get a membership somewhere (they've gotten real reasonable lately). I only say this bc beginners have a hard time with motivation and usually paying for it is enough motivation to go. Otherwise, you might just go buy the equipment and let it gather dust in your basement. At this point, get a membership, and maybe when you know what you are doing a little better (what you like, don't like, etc..) then you can set up some home equipment (treadmill, eliptical, bench).. that would be my best advice for ya.. good luck..

its a good commitment...do it with a friend...makes you go when you don't feel like it...cant let your friend down!..also I recommend you pay / sign up for a year....makes you stay with it as you have paid in advance. But paying as you go might be less pressure ..its what i do. Overall I found that going to the gym, and a swim after the work out got me thinking about other areas of my life that need looking at..diet, some outdoor activities...the feel good factor after a workout and a swim is a great buzz. I'm 65 ..staying fit and healthy , like learning , can be a very positive way of life..good luck!

I'm not sure it's worth it until you've got a routine in place. I'd rather start off walking/running/jogging and doing stretches etc at home for a few weeks before joining a gym...

Gym works wonders:)
It makes you improve a lot. I am making sports like forever and the body just shows it. (it is not a narsisic comment people)
Just to tell you that you will see people on a diet and you will see the others making sports both of them could weigh the same but the one making sports will have a better body:)

i think it is, I love my gym.. it has shower, sauna, steam room, and every cardio machine has a tv and dvd player attached to it. I love to work out there. When i didn't have a memebership.. i would say... oh i'll just work out at home... and never do. I think it is a good way to loose weight and remember that you are paying for it.... i think that is a good motivate- to get your money's worth. Have fun and meet new people!!

It's only worth it if you use it. Just remember that eighty percent of having a fit, healthy bod is what you eat.
