There are altogether 220 episodes in Naruto before Shippuuden.
Episodes 1 to 135 form Part 1, which follow the plot of the original manga storyline. There are little filler bits in there too though, such as episode 101 (Unmask Kakashi) and episodes 102 to 106 (Land of Tea/Idate Arc).
Episodes 136 to 220 are fillers, which are there to prevent the anime from catching up with the manga too quickly. These fillers do not follow the original manga plotline.
Then after that comes Shippuuden, of which there are currently 19 episodes.

well naruto and naruto shippuden are two different series, if your asking haow many do you have to watch so you'll under stand it, 1-135, 136-220 are boring filler, also skip 101-106

Many of which are filler. Its a good show but I liked Yu Yu Hakusho more.
