Right now, I'd say the best pet for your family is a stuffed toy.
Pets are not novelties. They are living, breathing creatures that require regular, daily attention and care. Each species comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages - so weigh them carefully. Dogs and cats will cuddle. As will tame rabbits, gerbils and small rodents. Birds will sing and some talk, reptiles are pretty clean and don't require as much care as a mammal or bird. Fish are as entertaining as any TV show.
But Dogs need walked, cats need a cat pan and are hard to train. Rodents and small furred pets spill their shavings. All furry pets shed, Birds are messy too, and molt once or twice a year with feathers and dander every where - and live a long time (25 or more for a cockateil and often 100 for a larger parrot). Reptiles can carry salmonella. Fish are finicky and will die at the drop of a hat - and you can't cuddle with them.
If Mom has to care for the pet once the "novelty" wears off - then get the pet for MOM - not the children. That said, does MOM want a pet at all? If so, then what kind of pet?

If you're looking for a pet that is low maintenance then sorry to say, but you are looking for a cat. The only hard work about a cat is changing the kitty litter, which in reality isn't all that hard. And if you will allow the cat to wander around outdoors then you don't even have to have a litter box! They clean themselves, so no baths needed, and for moms, they turn out to be great pets. You'll change your mind about the pet once you're sitting down reading and all of a sudden this cute furry kitten is curling itself up in your lap.

Growing up i had many pets, ranging from dogs to lizzards. My mum always said that the cat was the least trouble. As long as she fed the cat, it would sleep most of the day and was outside during the night. Hamsters seem like a good idea, but they smell if not cleaned weekly and often get lost if let out of the cage. Fish also can be difficult to clean, you need to store the fish somewhere while you clean the tank and stones this can be difficult with to children over your shoulder. If you do plan on buying a pet can i suggest you phone your local animal rescue centre, they often have young animals waiting to be rehomed. http://www.rspca.org.uk/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RSPCA/RSPCARedirect&pg=rehoming
Good Luck!

A gerbil, or a hamster make good pets. But when I was younger, I had a beta fish. They're very easy to take care of. They don't need a big fish bowl, their bowls stay clean for quite awhile, and you only need to feed them about once a day. And since I was young, even if I forgot to feed him for a day or two, he was still alive and healthy. Betas are very easy pets.

The absolute easiest pet I have ever had or got for my son is hermit crabs. Much easier than Guinea pigs. We read up on them and actually have a nicer environment than most pet shops. He holds them and hasn't been pinched yet. He loves looking for new shells for them. I agree they are not very cuddly, but if you think its just going to be a novelty then I think these can't be beat. Except by maybe a fish.

guinea pigs are easy but every animals needs care. the very easy animal to take care of is a cat. but ferrets needs a lot of care, but if your children dont have anything to do all day, then they can be very busy with ferrets cause ferrets needs like 4 hours to be with their owners. and a bunny wabbit is always a nice pet for kids.
but you will get a lot of different answers, so you have to think and try what is the best pet for your children.

Get a chinchilla!!! Not only are they easy to take care of, but every child that has come to my house is absolutely fascinated by my little "rabbit-squirrel" or "kitty." Plus, the rodent ball always gets a kick out of kids.
The cage is low maintenence, you never give it a bath, you dont have to worry about bites and scratches (maybe a nibble--but my chinny never broke the skin) and you'll love it because its adorable =-)
good luck!
