I would say if you're looking for similar bands currently, try the Killers.....or try the Swedish band Kent. Most of their albums are in Swedish, but they've recorded a couple in English.
IMO, you'd be better off checking out alot of the new wave bands from the 80's. You'll find the influences for most of the alternative/electronica bands of today...I'd recommend

The Cure
New Order
Gary Numan
Pyschedelic Furs
The Jesus & Mary Chain
INXS
Those are some of the more "darker" new wave bands
