Typically extiction occurs when a new species evolves and replaces the ecological role of another, stealing its food and resourses and reproduces more often. Mass extiction occurs when the conditions we need to live change so rapidly that we cannot evolve and change quick enough to survive.
A large climatic change would do it but i think that the humans we are now will just be out evolved by a species that reproduces more prolifically.
I just hope that it's a more intelligent, more benevalent species of man, a telepathic race perhaps? However looking at the type of human that has most children i'm not overly confident. No offense to anyone and the type of peson i mean won't be on this forum, so if your reading this i don't mean you.

To use extinct as a verb is obsolete. Have you been taking grammar lessons from our President? When the Human Race becomes obsolete then it will go extinct. It probably will not be a single event that causes this extinction, rather, a series of events that will tax the ingenuity of the species. Many of these events will no doubt be caused by mankind, and will serve as a warning for future developing species not to recreate those things detrimental to a species survival.

Well, if you're religious, you can say that only those who have wronged others throughout their lives and have not repented to God will die forever, while those who have will be saved and a new greater Earth will be born, thus Man won't really go extinct. If you're more of a scientific type, however, you may find that several events may wipe out the human race such as: the aging of the Sun, gamma ray bursts (look it up), the Holocene Mass Extinction Event (in which most animal species may die out as a result of human activity, leaving humanity to suffer from possible starvation), an asteroid collision, a new Ice Age from global warming, the drifting of the Moon which may cause weather conditions on Earth to spiral out of control, or even nuclear warfare.

I don't think the human race will become extinct. Even after Armageddon humans will live on the new earth.

A giant volcano. This would cause a giant cloud of dust that would kill all plants and alot of people. With no plants we could not eat. All animals and humans would slowly die. The earth would suffer great storms and dramatic climate changes. The earth would not recover if the volcano was big enough.

Ultimately and simply,
our own greed.
From there, natural forces will (or already ARE) foil our every attempt to survive.
