In terms of recorded killed and died from wounds, North Carolina takes the cake by far, with over 3 times the recorded losses of Virginia, the second most affected Confederate State.

In terms of percent of military personnel, South Carolina had the worst casualties, at 23% lost or killed. North Carolina comes in second at 17%.

Apparently, the Carolinas were not so fortunate in battle. Although not many battles took place in North Carolina, they contributed a very large number of troops to the Confederacy.

For military losses, you might want to see:

Fox, William F. Regimental Losses in the American Civil War. Albany, N. Y.: Albany Publishing, 1889.

Keep in mind that Confederate numbers and losses are not always reliable. Often losses were greater than reported.
