John Ford is my personal favorite. Since two genres I really like are westerns and war movies, he's right up my alley. Great idea of how a mvie should look to the audience, and always surrounded himself with great writers, cinematographers and art and set directors. Others I admire are:
Howard Hawks
Alfred Hitchcock
William Wyler
Michael Curtiz
Billy Wilder
Steven Spielberg
Norman Jewison
David Lean
Woody Allen
Stanley Kubrick

Spielberg. He can tackle any genre and he does it all with style. Most directors have a specific forte and are not as good at other genres, but Spieelberg is equally as good in drama, action, sci-fi, comedy, or fantasy.
