Aside from learning new material and gaining new skills and having an excuse to do cheering in the summer, a lot of emphasis is put on bonding. Teams are encouraged to dress alike, take time to get to know one another, play silly games together. It really makes a difference in the quality of relationship a team has.

A cheerleading camp is where you learn cheers, dances, stunts and tips on different things.
A cheer clinic is where you learn cheers, dances, motions and get tips on what you might be doing wrong and other things.

They're both used for practicing dances [depending how long they take the learn, usually you learn the longest ones at camp/clinic]
It also shows what spot you'd be good in,say air throws.you're either the side, the back or the one that jumps in the air.
