The nest is built up over the course of the spring and summer and dies off during the winter. DUring the late summer is the time when a colony has the most yellow jackets or hornets and more are out looking for food and nesting material.

Not sure where you are but here in Idaho they are thick as thieves in NC. Summer is not a month old yet and they are everywhere. After a day and a half I had a yellow jacket nest in my car door and got 5 stings from them. In cooler, wetter climates maybe they emerge later.

Late summer and early fall there is less food for them, i.e. other insects, so they range further and look for other things to eat. Watch one chew out a chuck of hot dog sometime. They onlydo that when hungry.
