Tuvok [Vulcan security officer in Star Trek: Voyager] would respond like this. While there is a possibility that the child could survive the impact of the vehicle, the mother could live up to her word by not ever buying him sweets. However, if the child doesn't survive the impact of the vehicle, there will be no child to buy sweets for in the first place. So you could say that her statement is logical in an after the fact sort of way. It is her parenting skills that I find rather illogical. If the child is able to understand he won't get anymore sweets, it would be logical to make it clear to him that he could loose his life if he goes on the road again instead.
Live long and prosper.

She probably wont buy him any sweets...what a weird way to get a point across...There may be a day the kid does not want sweets and out in the road he goes.
I am with your opinion. Something else should of been done.

Sounds pretty typical to me.
on a par with, "well if you fall and break your leg don't come running to me."
Judging from my experience in teaching "Critical Thinking" using logic is physically painful for a lot of people. I've actually heard students say, "My brain hurts."

Love it! It's right up there with 'if you fall off that wall and break both your legs, don't run to me for sympathy...'
