There are several reasons to prune a rose. First, you prune a rose to encourage new blooms and growth. You do this by cutting off a dead flower down to a set of 5 leaves. Make sure the set of 5 is pointing outward because a new cane will grow in the direction the leaves are pointing.
Second, you prune to get rid of dead or dying canes. Old woody canes that have turned brown, but only do this in Autumn.
Third, you prune the entire bush in Autumn to about two feet. This will make your bush bigger and fuller for the next season.

I agree with sptfyr that and if you want bigger roses you cut off the surrounding blossoms in the rose cluster to create a bigger rose.
I also have eight rose bushes.

to cut back on the stems removing spent blossoms and branch they grew from ,makes the rose bush fuller and healthier

You are getting rid of last year's dead growth so the bush puts its "energy" into growing new shoots...for new flowers.
