Ok people I just wanted to throw that out there. No its not wishfull thinking, just wanted to ask something hard and get opinions flying. Since civil unions are now legal in the UK, could a member of the royal faimly enter into one. Lets say Charles had a third son that was "HAPPY" could he enter a civil union without losing his place in the line of succession?

The two first answers are wrong.

A member of the royal family could enter a union with a same sex partner if they have permission from the Queen (with the advice of the Prime minister). They would only lose their place in the line of succesion if the union is with a Catholic, or someone who has been catholic.

Since it's not a marriage under the law, it would not be subject to the Royal Marriages Act, so they could enter into one without the permission of the monarch, privy council, or parliament.

Yes. Look at Prince Charles and Camilla. They had a civil wedding. So the answer is yes!

Like any union/marriage it would have to be approved by Parliament, if they give the go ahead I don't see that there would be a problem.

I think it can happen, but they would have too lose their place
in the line of succession.
