in the middle of a busy shopping town. My 5 yr old son picked a used hypodermic needle and said 'mummy look what I found' He was holding the needle which was unsheathed. I immediatly took it off him and marched into Boots the chemist where they reluctantly disposed of it.
The more I think about it the more I think the junkie had jacked up in the booth selling the evening telegraph as we walked past it seconds before and I had clocked something fishy but did not think of it until afterwards.
I have never experienced anything like this in my life and was utterly horrified that my son picked it up.
I wan't this looked at and want some advice here, I have alreadt emailed the evening standard
What would other folk do / have done?
Thanks

Firstly, did the needle break your sons' skin?
If not, it is VERY VERY unlikely that he has 'caught' anything.
If it has, it is VERY unlikely that he has 'caught' anything. HIV especially, is a very delicate virus, and does not live long out side the body. It would however, be adviseable to get you GP to check him out.....he/she will know what to screen for.
You did the right thing in getting 'boots' to dispose of the needle. However, I think I would have asked them for a container to put it in, so that it could be taken to the police.
I would still be inclined to go to the police, so that they are aware of the situation, especially as you have informed the press. Telling the paper is also, a good thing as it highlights the problem to others.
Well done, for dealing with this so well.

Blessings :)

Firstly instruct your son NEVER to pick up a needle, that he should tell an adult that it is there and leave it alone.
Secondly I would have got an antiseptic wipe and made him use that on his hands. Let him know that they have germs that can make him very sick.
Thirdly notify the local law that there was a needle disposed of in a busy area, and have them follow it up.
And I agree with the guy at the top, if there was any chance of a transfer, get your son a blood test. Better safe than sorry.

There are numerous circumstances that can result in a player getting struck in the groin area. These happen quite naturally. We don't hear about them that much because MOST players do wear a cup. Talk to his coach and get his input. However, if you still feel strongly about your son wearing a cup, make it a condition of being able to play. Teenage boys feel invincible, but in this case, I agree with you.

I remember when I was five picking up a used condom on the playground at school... Stuff happens!

Know what? Maybe your horrified reaction made such an impression that you'll never have to worry about your kid being a druggie!

You need to get over the fact that this sort of thing happens ,and you can't do much about it. Good Luck.Your ranting, and freaking out won't stop 1 junkie from shooting up.

its a sad reflection of the society that we live in today.all you can really do is explain to your child as best you can and tell him never to pick up things like that because of the risk of infection or worse.

I would definatley watch out for that guy and tell him about what your son could of done to himself. It is up to that guy to what he does in life, but doing in a public place, and then leaving his 'rubbish' on the ground is horrible. You should definatley talk to him. I would anyway.
