You can safely wear a tampon while you sleep at night, there is an extremely low risk of toxic shock syndrome- but it is more associated with a tampon left in place much longer. The problem grabbed headlines in the 80's when it was associated with a highly absorbant type of tampon which is no longer even made, and the material isn't used any longer. Unless you already have a staph infection elsewhere on the body, you would be quite safe to wear one overnight- though you would not want to wear it more than 12 hours to be safest. The inserts put in boxes of tampons now are rather sensationalized on this subject, the result of the scare way back in the 80's. Just use the lightest absorbancy as you can, and relax. I've known ladies to come in to the clinic and have one they forgot to remove weeks before, and if they don't croak from it, you probably won't in 8-12 hours. There are plenty of other things you are at much higher risk for than TSS.
