I prefer Peter Gabriel by far, although the first few post-Gabriel Genesis albums were rather good. ("A Trick of the Tail" comes to mind.)

Phil Collins was a spectacular drummer and he is a good singer, don't get me wrong, but I find his voice way too poppish-sounding for my taste.

Peter Gabriel pretty much was the heart and soul of Genesis, and no matter how oddly flamboyant he may have been in his lyrics and costumed/makeup'd stage theatrics, he truly was (and still is) unique, one of a kind, and every bit as much your "prog-rock singer archetype" as Jon Anderson of Yes, and Greg Lake of ELP.

That guy from the "Calling all Stations" flop was OK, but really didn't register with me, one way or another.

Anyway, your opinions please . . .

True Genesis fans would say that Genesis was the best with Peter Gabriel. As you said, he was the heart and soul of Genesis, the band was completely ruined after he left. Phil Collins does not appeal to me at all, it's wrong that most people think that he's the brainchild of Genesis, he just turned Genesis into another simple poppish band. When Peter Gabriel was in the band, Genesis was an incredible, complex and creative prog rock band, everything was great - the long, excellent instrumnetal solos, songwriting, vocals. Most old fans despise their new stuff, because the complex songs changed to more compact, radio friendly material and was not welcomed by critics.

I have to go with Phil Collins, but only because I'm only 35 and I've heard so much more Collins-era Genesis than Gabriel-era. I know a lot of people say he changed the band and made them "pop" but if you listen to a lot of their stuff, even later stuff like "Living Forever" and "Fading Lights", there was actual complexity, stuff that actual musicians would appreciate... not just ear candy.

I'm not sure I could pick one over the other. As others have pointed, each had their distinct qualities for two different periods in Genesis. If I had to choose, I would probably lean toward Peter Gabriel, because as a solo artist, he's one of my favorites.

They were both equally talented in their own right. They both had their own style and it worked for them both. Peter Gabriel I think had more artistic talent when it came to performing and songwriting while Phil Collins had more commercial appeal and a better voice.
