I have come across a lot of working mums who must work 2 or 3 jobs, attend school (High, College or University) and look after children. Are the wages really that low in the States?

I'm not from the States, but our minimum wage is $12.00p/hr and I thought that was low.

Minimum wage is low in the states, but not that low. The problem is that women who do this don't have the education or experience needed to make ends meet and need to work 2 or 3 part time jobs because they are not qualified for anything else. Often women in this position don't have a partners support, probably because they were stupid with who their baby daddy would and when they would have children. No woman can accidentally become a parent. Education is also very expensive. Of course , women who are in this position put it on themselves with the choices they made in life and there is no need to feel sorry for them. American woman have every opportunity not to have to live like that, but unfortunately like anyone else, there are stupid American women.

The U. S. Government and American Employers in this Country pay their Employees Poverty Level Wages, instead of a fair and equitable Living Wage*...To continue to do so is to guarantee that they remain the working poor*... The minimum wage that was recently passed is $7.25 an hour, but does not reach that amount until 2010 because it was set up on a graduated basis thereby guaranteeing the immoral and enslavement and abuse to MILLIONS of American Workers*... Is this a great Country or What?..........

It totally depends on where you live within any country. I'm in Saskatchewan, Canada and our minimum wage is just under $8 and hour. In a big city, it's not a living wage, but would be fair in a town.

Minimum wage in my state is only $5.15. With gas prices as high as they are (around $3 a gal is the norm now), I don't see how people even afford to drive to work & back home.
