24 carats is considered "pure" gold ---
however -- it is an extremely soft metal at this purity and easily bent and marred !! The lower the carat rating the harder the gold creation is and the harder it is to mar or deform the piece !! If you have a 24 carat gold ring -- take exceptional care with it or you will be wearing a dinged and mis-shapened piece of jewelry in no time at all !!!
Look on the inside of the band -- it should be stamped with the carat weight on the inside -- ie -- 24K --- 18K ---14k ect.!!

24 Carat is pure gold. However jewelry is never pure gold because gold is to soft a metal. Gold is combined with other metals to harden it. Most gold jewelry sold in the states if 14kt (50%) gold or 18kt (75%). Sometimes jewelry is gold plated meaning the under a layer of Gold is some other metal. Class Rings are sometimes 10kt. In places like Dubai, UAE they sell 22 karat gold which is the closes thing to pure. You will notice that it is very yellow in color and soft enough that it bends and breaks if not handled with extreme care. I hope this helps.

"Carat" is a measure of weight in gemstones and "Karat" is a measure of purity in gold, but by the price you mentioned, I'm guessing you're in the UK where you use "carat" for gold purity as well...
Pure gold is 24 karat (or 24ct in the UK), but as already mentioned is too soft for use in jewelry.
If I'm correct about you being in the UK, the ring is required to have hallmarks inside the band which you can look up to find out all sorts of info, including its purity, but for gold the important numbers are:
375 = 9ct
585 = 14ct
750 = 18ct
916 = 22ct
999 = 24ct, but will likely only be found on bullion

24 karat gold is, by definition, pure gold. Pure gold is very soft and would quickly wear, dent and bend in normal usage so it is mixed with another metal to improve its wear resistance. The other metal is often silver, sometimes copper (red gold) and in such alloys the maximum fineness is 22 karat, i.e 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metal. The melting point of pure gold is somewhere in the region of 1000 C, under no circumstances could it melt in your hand, unless you were holding it in a furnace! It would, however, be soft enough to be marked with a fingernail or distorted by hand strength if the piece was a couple of inches long and not too thick.

24 carat is pure gold but you would want 18 carat or maybe 14 because you will need some mixed metals in there to make the gold stronger so it doesn't snap or break.

Cowboydoc is right. It depends if it has a purity of .999 or .900 pure gold to determine it's value. Not it's carats.
