i recently studied cartesian skepticism (matrix/ brains in a vat) and solipsism.

and i read that the ideas are known to be self refuting because of language. and then they go on to mention wittgenstein. i read this on almost every article i read about the ideas.

so my question is: are the ideas universaly known to be self refuting and not to be taken seriousely? if this is the case then why is it that they say its "self refuting" yet they go onto state that the ideas can never be "proven or disproven"??

What is self refuting is the claim that, "Truth is relative." This is most strikingly the case when we then follow up with a response: "So it's true that the only thing which is true is that nothing is true?"
That question proves the rediculous self refutation of that way-to-popular philosophical belief.

Solopsism attempts to hide the self refutation by making relativity of truth individual, on a person-by-person basis. It still crumbles under the same scrutiny, however. This is because the only truth (in that theory) is that truth is what every individual believes it to be. Well, if I believe that the previous statement is not true, then the system has just collapsed.

Brains-in-a-vat is not a part of this discussion. That is something different, we cannot know for certain that this is not true. However, those formally educated in philosophy are not concerned with this theory because it is considered to be "juvenile" in nature.
