It just means that apples abd oranges are different things, so you can't compare them. If someone says that's like comparing apples and oranges they just mean you can't really compare them.

The saying "that's like comparing apples to oranges" should not be taken literally. It should be taken figuratively. It simply means trying to compare two things that are opposites almost and have absolutely nothing in common. For example, compare the speed of a runner with the strength of steel. Of course, this is an exaggeration, but this should give you an idea of the absurdity of the above comparison, which, by the way, would be impossible to measure, let alone compare.

Yes you've got it. Which one is better? Neither unless you have something to measure them by because they are two entirely different things.
If you were to say which is redder, or which is more popular, you might be able to come up with an answer, but comparing apples and oranges shouldn't be done unless you have some sort of criteria to compare them with,
Take people Jane and Bob
To ask which is better at sports is like comparing apples to oranges because although Bob is better at baseball, Jane is a much better Tennis player - apples and oranges

Apples and oranges are in two different categories. Thus, they cannot be compared. So when someone says what you're doing is like comparing apples and oranges, then whatever you're comparing can't be compared because they are different things.

You can compare 2 apples to each other (wow! your apple is soooo much bigger than my apple!)

You can compare 2 oranges to each other (yummy...my orange is juicier than yours is.)

But its impossible to compare apples to oranges because they are two different and individual pieces of fruit. You can't compare two things so unlike each other. They're INCOMPARABLE.

Does that help? LOL

Apples are not citrus fruits, but oranges are. They fall into different classifications.
