Look what freedom gets us- Right wing talk radio, religous zealots, Fox News, George Bush, obeisity, cigarette smoking, global warming, and the list could go on and on. Isn't it time for a stalinist type dictatorship to keep the masses in line.

FIY.....I'm veery familiar with the so called "evils" of stalinism. I think Dissent should be crushed. No one was murdered, they were getting exactrly what they had coming.

Why don't you direct this question to the masses who have actually experienced a Stalinist type dictatorship? Only those who know the difference are qualified to answer. What they have to say would surely be a real eye opener to those of us who take freedom for granted. Most of us would be in line for the expressway to Siberia on the first day!

Freedom isn't over rated at all, it's probably the best gift given to humanity. This is a rediculous question. By the way, Stalin was a ruthless man who had millions of people murdered, he was evil and I hope no regime ever becomes like his ever again.

Now if you are asking about free will, that's very different. I believe humans are programmed genetically to have certain reactions to all types of situations which means that free will might not actually exist.

Dont' be so negative...Sarahscute2000!
Freedom also gives us right to listen to whatever we want on the radio, to believe in what we want, um...Mother Teresa (what if she didn't have the freedom to become a Nun?), the right to excercise, the right to stop people from smoking around us(!)...this list could on & on too...
If Freedom is being abused, now thats another question...
But look back on the countries that cowered under dictatorship, read up a bit...and you'll thank God that you're free. Honey, i'm probably oceans away from you & we are free to express our views with each other...You think you'd have that under a dictatorship?

What are u stupid? Without idiots and phsyco's we'd all have manic depression and kill ourselves. If you want 2 get fat then do it, if you wont 2 smoke then do it. Global warming has nothing 2 do with freedom, it's already happened there's nothing killing freedom would do about it. Fat people don't harm u in the slightest u dumbass [unless they fall on you.] If you can't agree with the other people in the world, then go find a new country. I've had enough of the dumbasses of the world saying they hate
America and wish that they lived in a different country. Just because our President is a screwup doesn't mean our country sucks. Just because there are people who decide to make things up rather than base their opinions on facts, doesn't make our country suck. We were based on freedom. And "Freedom" as you so elegantly put it, means everyone gets to dictate what they get to believe in for themselves. And you should stfu and gtfo of our country if you don't feel the same.

Are you making "reductio ad absurdam" arguments just to get people to think? You can't really be serious!
BTW, throughout history, the average life span of a democracy has been 200 years before it becomes a dictatorship. The USA is, unfortunately, heading in that direction at an increasing rate. If you want to read a scholarly article on that subject, email me.

Yes, freedom is overrated. It gives you the option of not tuning in to right-wing talk radio, religious zealots and Fox News. It also gives you the right to vote against George Bush without fear of reprisal. Yes, your freedom should definitely be taken away since you obviously have not learned to appreciate it and those who died defending that overrated menace to society; freedom.

Have you got the slightest idea of stalinism? No!!! You would have never exposed this question for the forum to be discussed if you knew just a little bit what stalinism meant? There is no stalinism , not in their darkest nightmares people would wish it to come back.

Certainly some people think we have to abandon freedom to save it. They are called 'the Bush Administration.' They aren't Stalinists, though, they are Fascists. Google Prescott Bush, W's grandad. He comes by his Fascism honestly.

That's what freedom is all about, your individual rights to say and do what you want.

Ask the hundreds or thousands of young people through the generations that gave heir lives fighting for freedom if it's over-rated?

Communism is a great concept, but I'd prefer a Democratic Society over a Socialist Republic, anytime.
