The war in Europe had ended in the spring of 1945, but the Japanese refused to surrender and didn't even consider it an option. The Americans had to the choice to invade mainland Japan or to use the bomb which had been created through the Manhattan project.
Furthermore, FDR had died just months before, leavin the new President Harry Truman under alot of pressure. By this time many Americans were tired of the war and begun to forget about the war still being fought in Asia. Pressure from outside, as well as the goal of ending the war as quickly as possible, provoked Truman to choose the bomb instead of sacrificing thousands of more American soldiers against the formible Japanese army.
While many assumed Truman would attack Tokyo or Kyoto, he chose instead the smaller cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By this point Tokyo was already bombed to pieces and suffered from numerous devasting fires. On the other hand, if he destroyed the historic and old capitil of Kyoto, Truman feared the Japanese would only fight harder.
Either way, the bombings completely destroyed the moral of Japan. The first bombed dropped on Hiroshima devasted the Emperor. Nevertheless he allowd the few days alloted for surrender to pass, and the Americans then dropped the second bomb of Nagasaki. After seeing the destruction, the Emporer had no choice but the surrender.
The reaction of the world community was stunned. Out of guilt and as a political move, the American government moved in and rewrote the entire Japanese government and helped revise a constitution. I have also heard that the pilots who dromped the bomb all ended up tortued and mentally unstable for the rest of their lives. Over all, the experience could have been avoided and only opened the world up to nuclear war.

The Bombing showed (though it was a bluff) that America was so superior that we could destroy Japan with very little cost. It is a basic concept of the military that the only time one wins a war is when the morale of the enemy is destroyed (units and soldiers don't mean a thing if they don't have the will to fight).
By using the bombs then, it was also assured that Atomic weapons would not be used later to greater and more devastating effect (for example, if they hadn't been used until Vietnam then nukes instead of agent orange might have been used to clear the jungles, people discovering only after the fact how reprehensible such weapons are).
That is about as short as I can be before I enter into reactionary territory that is rather long.

The bombings were completely unnecessary. The US completely had air superiority over Japan, with Gen. La May sending his B-29s to bomb Japan with little to none resistance. In one massive bombing raid just before the nukes, the bomb loads were primarily incendiary. This raid killed some 100.000 Japanese and since homes were built of bamboo, made for a high count of death.
To add to this the US Navy had a ring around the Japanese Islands. Nothing coming in or out. Japan relied on raw goods coming in to feed their war machine.
Conversations were going on, with Russia has the go between, with the US. Back channels were also going on between Japan and America.
People in Japan were living on less than 700 calories a day. The army was having them grow soy beans and using the oil to make gasoline.
The US spent billions of $ to create the A bomb. The Army Air Core view the bomb as just another tactical weapon. Their was a general feeling the Japanese would fight to the last man in the US. President Truman felt that if it saved the lives of "our Boys" and shorten the war to use the A bomb.
There is much more to it, but I hope this helps.
