Hey, recently I bought desktop memory from bestbuy. Turned out it was defective. It's supposed to be compatible with my pc and everything but when i installed it i kept getting beeping sounds see here for more detail http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aki7VY5kklvyMqAPn.Bsje3sy6IX?qid=20070707193212AASeQI3
Anyways I was wondering if i should go to Bestbuy and bring my PC to them. And this time make sure I get the right one. I'm planning to get the same one i bought before. That should be a good idea right?

I'm not trying to sell a service, but you can get a free scan at Crucial.com of your system. If you have Best Buy install the RAM, they will charge you an arm and a leg. Also, I do not think that they will let you install the RAM while you are in the store, unless you find a really cool manager. Good luck!

The beeping sound is alerting you that the memory card is not compatible with your motherboard or you didn't snap into the slot properly. http://www.crucial.com/support/troubleshooting_install.asp It's not necessarly defective.
Look at the old memory card and see what type it is, you are supposed to get the same, only 512MB (if that's what you want) instead of 256 MB. But anyway, you should go to BestBuy and replace it. Hopefully you still have the original package and the receipt.

If you have defective ram, then exchanging for another strip of the same kind is fine. But if the problem is that the ram is incompatible, which happens often enough, then getting the same kind is not going to help you.

Make sure you buy the correct ram for your computer. Look up in your motherboard book for the recommended brand of RAM for your motherboard and also see if there is any limitations on the amounts in the slots, or how much can go together.

Just bring the memory module back to BestBuy and ask for a refund.
Also, try the memory configurator at http://www.memory.com
which will narrow down memory for you based on your PC's make and model.
