Flares yes. Gasoline less so - you really don't want the tank to leak or the gas to expand and pressure the tank in summer heat.

The flares would probably never pose a problem, but the gas is a definite issue. I wouldn't carry any extra gas unless you are in a situation where you are always running out do to long trips, like a huge ranch or something and you are in the middle of nowhere.

There used to be this fantastic Emergency Gas Product, that apparently is no longer made. It wouldn't explode, it came in a bottle the size of a bottle of oil, and it would allow you to go about 10 miles so you could get to the nearest gas station! I can't find it anymore, but if you do, please let me know!

Also, remember that if you drive a pick-up with a plastic liner, there is recent evidence that enough friction can be produced to ignite gas fumes when certain other objects, like plastic gas cans come in contact with the liner and get moved around.

The flares are fine, but I would fore go the extra gas unless absolutely necessary.

I don't think I have ever heard of a flare going off accidentally, but it might be a good idea to not store them next to each other. Just in case.

I don't carry spare gas anymore, except on my motorcycle. then I have it in MSR bottles like you use for camp stoves, as you don't need much on a bike.

There are things like fuel cells that race cars use so that gas tanks don't explode (but will still burn if ruptured), but these are specialized fuel tanks for race cars, not something you carry spare gas in. Actually a gas can exploding is very unlikely if anything it will catch fire, and burn your car down. But explosions are more a thing of hollywood than real life.

Well I seriously doubt that the flare would go off. Anyway, try to keep it away from direct sunlight.
Regarding the gas part. Why do you need the gas for? If you need it to light a fire or something, you can get special alcohol (or fuel) from shops which comes in a special container. Other than that I don't see why would you need gas for.
Nevertheless, if you really can't go without gas, try not to keep it in plastic or glass containers, but in a stainless steel, copper, aluminum (or alike) containers.

Drive safe ;)

perfectely safe, as long as gas is in gas tank and nothing will set off the flare.
