Joy Division are probably the most influential, but I also like The Cure and Echo And The Bunnymen. I like late-era Talk Talk too.
Jesus And Mary Chain and Cocteau Twins along with the other dream pop/shoegaze bands rule also.

Joy Division, definitely.
I also like early Cure and I LOVE early Siouxsie and the Banshees and Jesus & Mary Chain.
Also, I highly recommend The Fall as well.

Well, I think I like you. Happy Mondays, I've seen them and have their video. Joy Division...well, what more can I say: O.K.
The Clash: guitarists formed Big Audio Dynamite.
Charlatans U.K.: Seen them, awesome.
Buzzcocks: gotta luv 'em.
Echo and the Bunnymen: I think they just put out a new album!
Jesus and Mary Chain: Beautiful.
Morrissey (The Smiths): Delicately dismal in a pretty way.
BUT......
SIOUXIE SIOUX AND THE BANSHEES!
I only paint to Siouxie's music. And I got to meet her. She is awesome as well.

definitely joy division... but i also really like some of the old cure albums too. try listening to the sound and the chameleons too if you haven't heard them.
