For a sound company able to withstand competitors, business development never stops but is an ongoing process.

Successful business development often requires a multi-disciplinary approach beyond just "a sale to a customer." A detailed strategy for growing the business in desirable ways is frequently necessary, which may involve financial, legal and advertising skills. Business development cannot be reduced to simple templates applicable to all or even most situations faced by real-world enterprises. Creativity in meeting new and unforeseen challenges is necessary to keep an enterprise on a path of sustainable growth.

I work for a company called Tremor Video, where I head up business development.

We handle most non-sales related third-party relationships with the company. That could mean non-revenue generating integration partners, revenue-generating partnerships and channel sales and cost-centered vendors/service providers.

If a business unit within the company, for example our media sales team or our enterprise platform team, want to enter into an agreement or partnership with a third-party, they will generally do that via the business development office.

We will help them set up the relationship, put a favorable agreement in place and make sure that it's beneficial to other departments within the company, where applicable.

We are also proactive in seeking out partnerships that we think would benefit the company and we accept most of the in-bound partnership inquiries.

On top of that, we work cross-departmentally to launch new products, enter new geographic regions and implement corporate development and M&A transactions.

In general, business development will identify and create partnerships that enable leverage for driving revenue, distribution or that enhance the product. Sales is focused almost exclusively on driving revenue. Similar distinctions will apply when hiring a sales leader for an early stage company versus a more mature organization.
