RAC - Reservation against Cancellation. After the quota for confirmed accommodation is full RAC position is given. for this in each coach about 2 Lower berths are ear-marked which will accommodate 6 passengers. If there is sufficient cancellation the RAC passengers would be given the berths. If it the cancellation is not sufficient or there is no cancellation the 6 RAC Passengers would be given seats for sitting only. Here the chances of getting births are very bright as many a times the en route quotas goes without filled and all will get the accommodation of sleeper. For this full reservation fees are collected like confirmed ticket. Passenger holding RAC ticket can board the coach mentioned in the ticket or chart and travel. It is the obligation of the railways to take these passenger.
Whereas
Wait listed (WL) are different. The seats or berths will be given only in case of cancellations or release of fresh quotas, or due to passengers booked from other stations, not turning up at the time of departure of train. You should not board the train if your reservation is not given by the TTE. You will get the full refund for this immediately.

Thank you for asking this question because it is an answer i am seeking also. The answers are enlightening to me but have caused me to have a few other questions as a result. Do any of the 3 cause you to see God in your fellow man every minute of every day or is this an intellectual discussion only? Tvamevaham would always see each other as I AM THOU? When a person reaches that understanding do they automatically forgive the world and their brothers? At that level, have all differences of opinion been dissolved? I read that people that awaken from the dream usually do not stay in a body very long. Do your enlightened ones leave the body early? Thank you for this wonderful lesson. Maybe some comments as answers after voting- please.

If you have RAC, your seat is confirmed and you can travel in reserved compartment. You will get birth if any birth is vacant. However, in case of waiting list even your seat is not confirmed and if it is not confirmed before departure of train, you are not legally allowed to travel in reserved compartment.
