Do you think it will be good idea to make voting compulsory with an option to vote ‘NONE OF THE ABOVE’, and if ‘NONE OF THE ABOVE’ gets maximum votes, elections should be redone preferably with new candidates.

In most cases, most of the people who vote are part of some party and / or may have vested interest in voting for a particular party / candidate. Quite large populations of educated people who may vote intelligently don’t vote as they may not be interested or too lazy to do so.

By having a freedom of not to vote gives a chance to a lot of people not to be interested, but if voting in compulsory, they may take interest in the complete process and we end up improving the quality of voters. Anyway, there in no way to ensure only genuinely interested and educated people are voting today.

I want you to look around the next time you go to walmart and ask yourself if you REALLY want these people to HAVE to vote.

Why has no one pointed out that OUR votes do not matter.

Remember the Electoral College System? Duh.

Presidents do not win the election by getting the most votes from the Joe public. They receive points by winning an entire state. Gore won the popular vote in 2000- the popular vote being the Joe public vote.

It's all a farce anyway, do you think Bush could really win 2 elections? I mean his brother is the Governor of Florida for Christs sake! And look at out voting system, volunteers, easily reproduced paper ballots, etc, etc. Easier to fake than 9/11.

Wouldn't work, and I suspect many who don't vote is a none of the above, or they are too young to care or don't know anything about politics!

Compulsory voting is against everything we stand for! What are you going to do, have the police pick them up?

Better education, more history and doing something for someone else is a way to get people involved!

Many people today look at the white house and the last 12 years of the Republican house and see nothing but corruption and breaks for the wealthy. Not exactly something you want to be involved with, or party of!

Damn it, voting is compulsory in my country and I don't like it one single bit.

However, if 'NONE OF THE ABOVE’ gets maximum votes, more time will be wasted in doing re-elections and the seat of the government can not remain empty for a long time.

No. I would prefer that anyone who is not educated on the subject stay away from the voting booth. I don't care what you believe or how you want to vote. If you don't know a good reason for your vote and don't feel compelled to vote, then don't vote.

It's shouldn't be a popularity contest.

No. At present only half of eligible voters are even registered to vote. Less than one in five U.S. citizens have even read our charter of government (the U.S. Constitution). Most cannot even name the Member of Congress who represents their district. If voting is made compulsory, those same people will be forced to cast a ballot. Frightening, isn't it?

What makes you think that there are going to be better canidates. Also,no, because anarchists would probably find a way to ensure no government by just keeping it on a constant rotation. PLEASE do not assume that I am saying that I believe in the government the way things are done right now. I do, however, believe that some form of governing is absolutely necessary. We could not survive without. It would be even more chaotic than it is with it.

Voting should be made easier. I'd love to just be able to stop at a voting booth in a mall, or at a ball park and get my fingerprint scanned and cast my vote whenever I feel like it.

Why does it only take place on a single day? Why not have voting open for a week or a month?

If you want a third or fourth party we will have to take corporations out of the election process they are not human and should not have the same rights as people. Abolish corporate person-hood

Absolutely not!
If someone doesn't care enough to vote, they are not going to care enough to educate themself about who the best candidate is.

They only thing worse than a non-voter is an ill-informed voter.

I agree with Susan. I mean, we somehow managed to get Bush in office (not once, but twice!) WITHOUT mandatory voting.

Besides, the whole point of democracy is FREEDOM...
