If only im answering your question in the year 1990 I would suggest that you should consider the surgery, when you were younger and the prognosis is still good. I dont want to suggest to you to take another pain killers, because some of this meds have side effects such as gastric ulcers. If you really dont want surgery you can visit a physical therapy rehab, they have conventional way of decreasing pain for your lumbar area. But most of these modalities they use are only short relief for pain. I suggest that you avoid the position/task that you knew that is causing pain on your back and diet to lose weight and decrease the weight your placing on your lower back area.

It all depends on what the original injury was. I slipped and fell on ice this last winter and I've had problems off and on since my job requires me to stand for up to 12 hours a day. I normally try a heating pad on the area to promote blood flow and healing.

This might seem overly simplistic, but have you tried walking a mile or 2 a day? Sometimes my back gets so bad I can't even stand up straight and I really hobble for the first few blocks, but then it really straightens out.

Get in shape. Strengthening and weightloss will fix your problem. If not there must be an injury. You will need to see a neurosurgeon. be careful though. they always want to sell you on the surgery. which isnt always a good thing.
