Bradford White....if your pipes are copper then you should definitely solder them! There's too many variables to go into detail here. If the pipes are galvanized then teflon tape....use copper water flexes with brass nuts to go from the pipes coming out of the wall to the nipples that screw in the top of the heater. You may have to go to a plumbing supply store to get the BW heater tho. Whatever brand you get DO NOT get a Whirlpool!! By far the worst water heater on the market!

For the simplest solution to your problem, I would suggest you ask around and see if any of your friends or neighbors have any experience with plumbing work/soldering of copper pipes. To try to describe how to do this job in enough detail (and covering all variations of how the tank could be plumbed in, and the plumbing-related "disasters" that you could run into) would be like writing a book. By the way, there are books available at home centers (or maybe your town library) on how to do these repairs, but I would still suggest you find somebody to help you if this is your first plumbing job. You will also need somebody that has a little experience with electrical work to help you make the connections, if you have never done any wiring before.

If you've never installed a hot water heater, electric and, whether you like challenges or not, this is a job for professionals. I'm not saying you can't do it, I'm saying you better have someone there that does know what they're doing.
You can flip a switch to soon and burn out both elements, for instance. You can electrocute your self, you can cause great damage if you don't know what your doing.
Go to home Depot and ask them to show you the electrical water heaters, the prices and sizes, choose something that meets your needs and prices. They do have a class that teaches the installation you know, you should think about it.

Are you sure you need a 50 gallon tank? That is a very large one and may be hard to find. Bradford White, I think has the best reputation. http://appliancequickfix.com/ can give you a
good idea how your heater works.

Bradford White 'Hydorjet' . you will need flex supply lines for the water heater, and a new pressure relief valve. and you can use teflon tape if you want but not necessary.
