I grow all my herbs. I have a beautiful Oregano plant that I have nurtured indoors through the harsh Northeast winters. Recently I placed it on my back enclosed porch, which only gets heating from the sun and isn't insulated. It was doing fine, until I noticed about 20 little mushrooms (bright yellow) growing in the pot.
I used soil from the plant store. I don't understand what to do with it, because believe it or not I'm allergic to mushrooms.
Is the plant safe for me to use?

Yes it's really Oregano. I grow basil and rosemary also. I'm an Italian cook. I'm too old to bother with anything else.

If in doubt, thow it out. That's the safest thing.

If you love the flavor of the oregano, you can take a cutting, and grow it again in fresh soil. Not quite the same, I know, but at least your new oregano will have the lineage, but not the spores.

Make sure your plant soil is from a reputable dealer, and you might have the back porch checked out. There may be spores back there just waiting for fertile soil. Do you feel fine when you spend time back there?

If your allergy is not that bad, you have a little room to experiment, but if the plant makes you feel the least bit allergic, get rid of the dirt and try again.

Most likely those mushrooms are an indication of the plant roting. If it does not get much sun, the water does not evaporate. I would not eat those mushrooms, and perhaps only would use the upper leaves. Since oregano is very easy to reproduce, I would cut some healthy branches and plant them in soil to start new plants and would watch the water this time.

Those mushrooms are not edible, they are caused from a fungus your plant picked up and the spores dropped onto the soil. Remove the mushrooms which disperses spores by placing a baggy over the mushrooms and scooping them all out-being careful to not let any of the spores from the mushrooms contact your plant or the soil. Then I'd spray with a light mixture of dish soap and water. In the meantime, quarantine them from your other container plants. Hopefully, that MAY eliminate your problem.

Also...my garden i use a mushroom compost..which is derived from the left over straw/manure that s then sterilized in a large oven after they grow a crop of mushrooms for commercial purposes..maybe you got some that wasn't ran thru a oven to kill the mushroom spores..ALOT of plant stores buy this in bulk and then sell by scoops... I order a dump truck load every couple years..If you don't know what the mushrooms are..destroy the plant, too many mushrooms out there that can kill you..I grow all of my herbs too..even though I am a paint contractor..I love to cook and eat.... check out my flickr photo on page 1 and you will see my herb growing technique...I attached some aluminum rain gutters to my deck railings, painted them the same color of the trim and all i do is walk out of my kitchen door and cut what i want to use...link is below..veggie garden is on page 11 as well

It is perfectly safe!!!
There is nothing wrong with it!!!
Since u grew the Oregano indoors, the mushroom is explainable.
There is no poison in mushroom!! I myself eats mushroom soups!!
White ones though.......
It understandable that u re mushroom allergic. But that shouldn't make you abhor your Oregano!!
Just wear a glove and pull out the mushrooms, and ur plant is safe!!
Good luck!!

What kind of oregano grows mushrooms? Yeah throw it out, it is full of spores. It is not like you can eat it anyway. If you are really talking about oregano....
... ha ha ha...I am pretty sure you shouldn't use the oregano. You never know with mushrooms and fungis. Mushrooms can be quite posionous.
