It's a Jack Russel Terrier. I don't know why. He was always kind of quirky.

A Jack Russel Terrier. In the book Rowling said a small dog. In a 2005 interview with the fan sites The Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet, she went even further and identified the breed. Apparently she's got one herself.
"MA: What's Ron's Patronus?
JKR: Ron's Patronus? Have I never said that either? Oh no, that's shocking! [Laughter.] Ron's Patronus is a small dog, like a Jack Russell, and that's a really sentimental choice, because we've got a Jack Russell. He's insane."
