I just started a few days ago (15 to be exact and I'm enjoying it a lot) and I have a few questions about things...
1. If it is 7:00pm and I say "Have a nice day." instead of "Have a nice night." Does that bother you or make you think i'm stupid? Do you even think about it?
2. For those who are cashiers or have been, how long did it take you to get things down perfectly? I feel like I should know how to do things by now, but im still making simple mistakes.
3. Should I always ask "Would you like your milk bagged?" and for things like bleach should I ask too?
4. What should I say when I'm ringing you out? I normaly say hi cheerfully and smile, but it always feels like I should be saying more.
Any other tips would be fantastic! :)

1. Yeah actually it does bother me if you say day if it's night! I answer phones in my job and we have to be very precise.
2 It takes a few months to feel really confident that you know all the in's and out's of the job. Take a deep breath before each new customer- shake off the one that is walking away- and concentrate on the task at hand.
3 I never asked to bag things in gallon sized containers. They are usually not a bagged item and the customer will ask for it if they want it.
4 A smile and hello is great! Ask if they found everything they needed. Make eye contact. Since you are new to the job, I would leave the small talk alone until you have more confidence and experience with ringing the order. Concentrate on quick and efficient service and the chit chat will come later.
You will start to notice regular customers coming through the line and they are a good place to start with small talk as time goes on.
Good luck! You will be fine- it is great you care enough about the job you are doing to ask these questions!

I think that this interview will be about 1 hour. You may have to answer math questions to determine where you are in the basics. I think that you should take a resume; you have skills even without having had a job before. I don't think its a good idea to mention the days you want off. If anything say that you're available to start the day after you get back from your trip. I wouldn't let them know that I was postponing employment for a trip. Also, I advise that you call the store to follow up on your application.

1. I might think about it for like 15 seconds. It wouldn't bother me too much.
2. My sister was a cashier. It took her about 2 weeks to really get used to things.
3. I don't think it would matter. I usually like it to be bagged if i don't have a cart. You know, so that my hands don't get cold. but if i do have a cart, then there's really no need for a bag.
4. I don't think that anymore needs to be said. You could ask them how their day is going, etc.
Good luck!

1. I correct people when they do that.
2. It takes about a week
3. Just say "Do you need a sack for this?"
4. Just say hello and then start ringing, make sure you treat everyone the same, even if they are jerks.
Have a nice night!

1have a nice night
2 about a week. but give it a month then you should be fine.
3 yes always ask if they want something bagged
4 start a little conversation about something there getting but sometimes they start it with you so that will be easy for you. but sometimes if you don't feel like it. not mandatory.
good luck
always look like your working and keep a smile on your face.

I once saw a cashier get yelled at for telling the customer to Have a good day. The customer didn't like being told what to do.

For #1, don't worry about a nice day, or a nice evening. I'll bet they won't remember what you said by the time they get to the door.

being a cashier was the worst job i've ever had, i was cashier for like 2 months, there is just so many things to learn.. like all the payment options, credit card, debit card, check, food stamps, bridge card, rain checks..not to mention all the codes for the food that dont have barcodes..some food you pay by weight, some you pay by quantity..OMG i hated it lol..just be cheerful and ask questions..good luck to you =)
