BHAVNAGAR HISTORY-Existance 1723
Bhavnagar is the second largest city in the Saurashtra Peninsula in Gujarat State, western India. Flanked by the Gulf of Khambhat on the east, it has a port decaying from unchecked silting. It is the home to a population close to 5 lakh (half million), chiefly engaged in trade and commerce. The largest ship-wrecking yard in India has been developing at Alang, which is 50km to the south, that has provided a base for many industries and vocations in the city. Bhavnagar is also an important centre of gem-cutting craft.
Bhavnagar came into being in 1723. A village called Vadva was what used to be near the present heart of the town. Bhavsinhji (1703 - 1764), a Rajput King, ruled his state of Gohilwad from Sihor, a promising location to develop his new capital and the same Bhavnagar was derived from the king's own name, the suffix nagar meaning a city. The little village Vadva eventually got swallowed into the new capital and now forma the densely populated old town. Unlike most other princedoms in the Saurashtra region, Bhavnagar was fortunate in being ruled by competent, and welfare-oriented administrators, they made it economically, culturally and politically a progressive state. When India won freedom, Bhavnagar was the first among the 500-old Indian Princely states to opt for merge with the democratic Indian Union.
Bhavnagar is also known as the cultural Capital of Saurashtra Its life is rooted in communal and cultural harmony. Nanabhai Bhatt, Gijubhai Badheka and Harbhai Trivedi were the three persons who experimented and sew new trends in rural and liberal child education. Nanbhai's Gramdakshinamutri and Lokbharati have prepared three generations of brilliant workers and leaders engaged in reshaping village India. Gijubhai's Dakshinamurti became the cradle of new liberal children's education and charted a new direction in the field. Harbhai Trivedi pioneered a similarly new trend in secondary education and his Home School Became a model for contemporary educators in westers India. Liberal women's education was born in Bhavnagar through the efforts of another illustrious educator-social reformer Amrutlal Dani. What has become a vibrant cluster of women's schools and colleges today is due to his devoted and pioneer work. Bhavnagar's Samaldas College is the oldest institution of higher education in the region. Gujarati is the language of normal life, although Hindi is commonly spoken and understood.
