both my 90 bronco limited slip and my 84 bronco open diff i can use most any gear lube in the 90 i add an additive made for limited slip. just get a bottle of gear lube use a rachet and take the plug out that is located on the drivers side of the pinion on the 8.8 rear end anyhow and ad till it flows out. wouldn't hurt to just pull the rear cover drain the old install a new gasket and the cover back on and totally refill you will need about 2 bottles i believe. and no not all shops check it when the oil is changed

It should be listed in the maintenance section of the owners manual. The type of fluid depends on the type of rear end. whether it is a limited slip or regular rear end.

You can loosen all the bolts on the rear cover and let the oil or frease drain out. Then replace the cover and remove the fill plug and fill until it comes out of the fill plug, then replace the fill plug and you are done.
