Not very likely--- it would have to break in a way that it didn't break the block into the cooling casting, not break any of the oil passages, the cap and part of the rod would have to stay on so that you still had usable oil pressure, where the rod went threw had to be in area that didn't allow the oil to leak out. the piston and valves would have to block off the cylinder so that fuel didn't dilute the oil--or a spark cause the whole mess to catch fire. There is that one in a million chance----- but, I've never heard of anyone being that lucky--if they were, shame to waste all that good luck on a car engine.

Thrown rod or broken rod? If you threw it chances are your not going anywhere. If the rod is broken and depending where the break is it will run, but with a lot of noise. If the break is at the crank and with luck the piston is sitting near the top of the bore it will run, if not your going to have a mess on your hands.
As a note. Some people have and do make the mistake of thinking that they have thrown a rod because of the noise. Well a THROWN ROD is just that, THROWN. It has caused damage and in most cases, unrepairable. when in fact it was a spun rod baring, a wrist pin, bent rod, broken or collasped lifter, or numerous other things. It all depends on what type of engine.

People; you really need to define what type of vehicle, engine and such if your are going to get acurate answers to your questions.

Probably not the best move unless you're out in the middle of nowhere and gotta get a move on. If the rod is thrown, a number of things could be happening including the rod being thrown through the head, block, or smashed up inside the block. No matter what, even if it drives, it'll get further damaged the more you drive it.

How do you know it's a thrown rod, btw? ;)

NO!! Generally, an engine with a thrown rod won't run, because the connecting rod goes through the block.

do not think of it will make it that a approaches, I even have considered them bypass incredibly a approaches yet a hundred miles is pushing it, could desire to be risky to boot, the oil splashing could desire to capture hearth, engine could desire to grab up inflicting loss of administration. Maby verify into the fee of renting a tow dolly and make it nicely-known which you rather % information, i understand if I observed a well-known advert for somebody wanting a vehicle hauled and became going that way i does not think of two times approximately hooking directly to it. If there is no oil leaking and the motor vehicle nonetheless runs then it rather is probable not a thrown rod...it could have spun a bearing, or it may well be a piston wrist pin or in all danger purely a rocker arm. Have somebody pull off one plug cord at a time to work out if the sound is going away a splash with between the cylinders disabled. If it does bypass away a splash and if the gar will nonetheless run with the cord bumped off then this may well be the main secure thank you to stress it there in case you had to. If the sound does not bypass away in any respect then the project is in the fabulous end...rocker arm or valve. if that's the case you are able to purely stress it to the place to procure to bypass, save the revs down and take a while.
