I can understand why Howard was, but why Matt Holiday? Are they that desperate for competitors?

Major League Baseball has had a hard time getting players to commit to the Home Run Derby the last few years. Typically it's been reserved for just All-Star players, but when no one steps then they'll go outside the box. So what do you do when Bonds Griffey, Soriano & Derrek Lee back out? You go you get Ryan Howard.
Far as Matt Holiday he was a last minute replacement after Miguel Cabrera backed out.

Matt Holliday is an All-Star. He's a great player who's gone under the radar.
Ryan Howard was invited back to compete to defend his title.

that's easy... the big hitters opt out because:\
1. It's too long and grueling
2. There's always and outside chance of injury to hand, wrist, etc.
The Home Run Derby has become a joke and I can't believe that there are so many people still going to watch it PLUS
you've gotta get really tired of hearing Chris (THE MOUTH) Berman screaming back..back...back..back...back...GONE.
I think A-Rod and Bonds were smart to refuse to participate.
